Diversity

Diversity is extremely important in the field of the forensic psychologist. This is because there are times when involuntary therapy might be needed, and this attracts different types of people with diverse cultures (American Psychological Association, 2002). Therefore, it is important for a forensic psychologist to understand that there is a need to be sensitive to the culture of the individual.

There are two dominant diversity issues that exist in the case study. Firstly, there is the issue of religion. The old man is from Tibet, and he seems to share very different religious perspectives. This is the reason as to why he was very willing to burn himself alive for ideals that he holds close. Secondly, there is the aspect of culture. The old man is of a different culture, he is of Tibet origin and observes the cultures of his people even in the United States. He thinks that his culture is commonplace to all the persons, and this is the reason as to why he talks freely with his religious names.

It is important for a forensic psychologist to be sensitive to every culture. There is, therefore, a need to do more research on the issues of the particular culture to better understand. This is because one can only be able to be sensitive to another culture if he or she understands it (Specialty guidelines for forensic psychology, 2013). It is of the essence to understand that indeed individual and cultural diversity often recognizes the broad scope of factors such as ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religious, and spiritual orientation as well as other different cultural dimensions.

There is, therefore, a need for the forensic psychologist to demonstrate knowledge, sensitivity as well as skill when it comes to dealing with an individual of a different cultural diversity. There is a need to understand the culture and understand the interactions that exists amongst individuals and the different cultural variables (American Psychological Association, 1990). A forensic psychologist should always make sure that indeed his competency domains and interpersonal interactions are sensitive and are culturally appropriate to the person in question.
