Global warming

Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, oceans and surface due to the occurrence of the greenhouse effect. Continuous emission of gases such as carbon (IV) oxide, methane and fluorinated gases has caused a tremendous change in the composition of the gases in the atmosphere leading to climate change. For the last two centuries, the average temperature of the earth has risen steadily and is also projected to rise to 11.5 degrees Fahrenheit in the next century (Gore, 2006).

There are diverse causes of global warming. Human activities have contributed immensely to the occurrence of climate change. Excessive burning of fossil fuels emits large quantities of toxic gases into the atmosphere. According to Bradford (2014), the gases, therefore, absorb most of the heat of the sun and radiate it back to the earth’s surface. Hence, the interaction between the radiation of the sun and the atmospheric gases results in the greenhouse effect. Moreover, extensive deforestation has led to the emission of carbon (IV) oxide into the earth’s surface thus results in the development of greenhouse gases.

Global warming has brought devastating effects on the surface of the earth. There have been a decreased number of glaciers in different parts of the world for example in the North Pole (Arthur & Bonne, 2008). Moreover, many parts of the earth have experienced severe hurricanes and tornados that has destroyed property and led to the loss of lives. Arctic ice has also reduced tremendously as a result of global warming in the last few decades. According to UNEP (2007), one major impact of climate change, however, has been the continuous change in the sea and ocean levels. Large oceans such as the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean levels have increased significantly raising fears of the devastating effects of climate change.

However, there are strategies that have been put in place by international bodies and various governments to reduce global warming. One major way of reducing global warming is through the use of renewable sources of energy such as the wind and geothermal power. Replacing the fossil fuels with the renewable energy eliminates the emission of the greenhouse gases thus reduces global warming. The bodies have set policies that control the emission of greenhouse gases by industries. Moreover, according to IPCC (2007) report, various organisations have been spearheading awareness creation on the effects of global warming and combative measures to adopt.

In conclusion, despite the devastating effects that global warming has brought, effective measures have been undertaken to control emission of toxic gases. There has been a tremendous campaign on the importance of using renewable energy, public vehicles instead of private means of transport and tree planting programmes. The environmental bodies have also been providing financial and technological support to different countries to help in combating emission of toxic gases (Dincer, 2015). Moreover, this year’s annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will take place in France in November, is expected to highlight measures that will be used to control global warming effectively.
