Contemporary ethics
Abstract
It is critical to note that when it comes to installing ethical code in practice, it has always all been about the observance and preserving social standards, and morality in different practices for the benefit of the individual fields. There have been several developments in history that have shaped the contemporary ethical society, and they have instituted professional behavior.
One of the significant historical events that have changed the contemporary ethical society is the Tuskegee 1930’s syphilis experiment. The study involved 600 black men of whom 399 of them had syphilis (Darwall, 2007). The study, conducted without the benefit of the patient’s informed consent. In fact, the persons were lied to as the researchers told them that indeed they were being treated for the bad blood that at the time was a local term that described several ailments. However, the person did not receive any treatment to cure their illness.
In exchange for taking part in the experiment, it is critical to understand that the persons were given free medical exams, burial insurance, and free meals. Although the experiment was originally projected to last for six months, it took almost 40 years (University of Nevada, Las Vegas Office for the Protection of Research Subjects, n.d). The study received wide condemnation and led to the formation of general ethics when it comes to research. It has led to more focused research with an ethical approach where there is a need for approval of the experiment before it starts.
There has been a change in focus and states have started to believe that indeed secularization means that religion has been seen by many as not being the ground by which a person should act. With the works of Mackie (1977) as well as the analytic-synthetic distinction, there are implications for morality.
