The author argues that the management approaches that are currently used by the healthcare organizations are not the same as those used in other competitive industries. The healthcare organizations according to the author have lagged behind in terms of their management approaches (Zuckerman, 2000). The different companies which exist in changing environments have had no choice but to find management approaches that can cope with the pace of change in the industry. They always have to be prepared in terms of the future operating movement and for this reason, they have to have a statement of identity as well as a strategic direction in order to move forward. The strategic direction in many cases takes place in the form of a vision statement that acts as a compass to the organization headed into the future (Zuckerman, 2000). The author presents a point of view arguing that one of the most important things that an organization should have is a vision statement.

This is especially important when it comes to healthcare organizations in order for them to understand their strategic direction in the next couple of years. The vision statement according to the author often offers an effective strategy when it comes to the realization of visions and it helps a health care organization to cope with frequent as well as significant change (Zuckerman, 2000). The healthcare organization should try as hard as possible to ensure that they develop a vision statement that is broad-based, and it involves the input of different persons that exist in the organization. It is only through this way that an organization can be able to tap into the future and manage to create an effective, as well as efficient vision development process.

I completely agree with the author when he states that healthcare organizations have been left behind in terms of management approaches as compared to the other industries. Different organizations in other competitive industries have been able to ensure that they are on top of their game at every single time by creating visions that are adaptable, and which can be effectively used in the company (Zuckerman, 2000). However, this is not the case with the healthcare industry, it has created visions that do not lead into the future, but are just baseless. In my opinion, there is a need for the healthcare organizations to ensure that they look into the future with prospect by ensuring that they create manageable visions that can be achieved and which are in line with the strategic direction that the company wants to take in the next couple of years. However, I disagree with the author in terms of his assumptions that in a bid to create a strategic direction there is a need to involve all level of employees.

In my opinion, I believe that it is the work of the top management to ensure that they are able to create a strategic direction for the company because they are the ones who understand what indeed is needed in the organization and how it can be achieved. The other employees that exist in the organization should just be informed in the organization and then taught about how they can be able to implement the strategy. This is of importance as it will help guide the organization into the right direction and consequently ensure that the organization understands the strategic direction that it is taking. Therefore, the author is wrong in terms of stating that strategic direction that leads to the vision should come from the top management.

Critique 2

The author in his article states categorically that time often changes and, therefore, there is a need to ensure that the approaches to the strategy and its execution. There have been shifts in the strategies used, and currently the focus is on strategic leadership. One interesting thing about this article is the fact that the author takes time to explain the difference that exists between leadership and management (Wilson, 1996). He argues that the real difference between the two is that strategic management is a continuous process whereas this is not the case when it comes leadership. Strategic leadership according to the author is a public relations ploy, a term that promises immense change, but does very little.

There is, therefore, a need to ensure that leaders implement strategic leadership. The author presents five compasses that are crucial to strategic leadership. The first is the strategic compass which argues that leadership should create a direction that other persons will follow (Wilson, 1996). Secondly, the action compass creates a sense of strategic direction for the leader and where he should move next. The culture compass on the other hand states that there is a need to create a strategic culture in the organization (Wilson, 1996). The strategic culture often helps in strategic thinking and learning, and it creates a culture of trust and openness.

The socio-political compass is the fourth point, and it deals with challenges of competition, technology and markets. Further, it also deals with the power shift in the world and it creates a mine-field for the political issues that exist in the corporation in terms of social and political issues. There is a need to expect greater scrutiny in regards to these different corporate performance issues. Lastly, there is the moral compass (Wilson, 1996). This compass presents to the strategic leader a moral dimension of corporate leadership. The leader needs to make ethical decisions in order to steer the organization into honesty.

I concur with the author that a debate on strategic leadership is of crucial importance. I agree with his five compass directions and in fact continue by stating that there is a need for the mission as well as the vision of the company to be integrated with the leadership. This will ensure that the leader internalizes these two important factions in the organization and from there one they can be able to engage in the development of the different strategies that exist in the organization.

However, I happen to differ with the author in terms of stating that there is a need for a leader to create a strategic culture. The 21st century is extremely dynamic and therefore there is an inherent need for an organization to understand that it needs to remain dynamic in order to expect change and consequently change with the time. A corporate culture is necessary, and it should be differentiated with the normal culture that exists within organizations. The strategic culture involves moving towards a certain target point that has been set by the organization. It involves thinking in a certain way in order to follow the strategic direction that is put out by the top management.
